The 1st GMA TV 10 May Magagawa Tayo Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition

THE DEBATE
The GMA TV 10, through THE AMIANAN AGENDA, in partnership with Lyceum Northwestern University and UP Baguio Debate Society, will conduct the first ever inter-collegiate debate competition aimed at fostering critical discourse on the prevailing local election issues among youth, particularly students.

The competition tagged as the “1st GMA TV 10 May Magagawa Tayo Intercollegiate Debate Competition” is held in the spirit of the coming elections. Through The Amianan Agenda, the competition provides a venue for critical thinking to help students and youth in their decision come the 2010 national elections.

OBJECTIVES
Critical discourse is an end in itself; the mere production of discourse is a greater end to be pursued; the competition aims to provide a venue for interaction among college students and a venue for discourse during a critical point in our nation’s history.

DEBATE FORMAT
This will employ the Modified Asian Parliamentary format. Modifications to the standard Asian Parliamentary Format are as follows:
(1) Preparation time for the debates will be 20 minutes only.
(2) Speeches are to last for 5 minutes.
(3) There will be no reply speeches.

The order of speakers and corresponding roles is as follows:

1. Prime Minister
2. Leader of Opposition
3. Deputy Prime Minister
4. Deputy Leader of Opposition
5. Government Whip
6. Opposition Whip

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING.
Debaters shall be judged based on the following:
(1) Matter. Matter refers to the substance presented by the debater in his/her speeches, and will be based on how well a speaker argues, how logical the flow of reasoning, how relevant the case, the general weight of the case, and how the case stands through repeated rebuttal.
(2) Manner. Manner refers to the general style and delivery of the speech, if the speaker is pleasant and concise, and if argumentation and rebuttal is organized and well-structured.
(3) Method. Method is the criterion used to measure how the task of each speaker is fulfilled, based on the burden imposed by the motion and by the team’s case itself.

SPEAKER SCORING IS AS FOLLOWS:

69 A score of 69 is given to a speaker with little or no substantive contribution to the debate.
70-74 A score ranging from 70-74 is a below average score, indicating that the speaker had some substantive contributing in the debate, but whose speech’s flaws outweigh such contributions.
75 A score of 75 is flat average, where speech flaws and positive points are equal.

76-79 A score of 76-79 is above average, where there are little flaws in the speech and largely substantive contributions made in the debate.

80 A speaker merits a score of 80 for a speech with minimal or no flaws, whose contributions were central to the debate.
The decisions delivered by the panel of adjudicators shall be final and non-debatable.

The competition will make use of single eliminations, and will take place on March 20, 2010 at the auditorium of the Lyceum Northwestern University.
